What kind of novel submission are they looking for at the Art and Writing Alliance Contest?
The Art and Writing Alliance: http://www.artandwriting.org/Alliance
I am planning on entering the novel contest.
I am best at horror/dark fantasy, but I am afraid they want something with a more realistic-fiction feel to it.
Anyone have any suggestions? I really want to win!
From the FAQ…
Is there a specific theme students have to address?
There are NO specifications or restrictions on content and subject matter in The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Students may approach any subject they choose and original, creative thinking is encouraged. There are two special themed based scholarships at the national level: The Creativity & Citizenship Award: Art for Social Change(works of art and writing that address contemporary social issues) and the New York Life Award (works of art and writing that deal with loss and bereavement).
So, while the judges will have their own preferences and biases, they’re supposed to give every entry a fair hearing, and they’re not supposed to refuse to give the prize to something just because of its subject matter. But look at it this way – if you do well in this contest and get some publicity out of it, people will expect you to carry on writing stories that are similar in style and genre to your winning entry. Do you really want to be known for writing a genre that you don’t like?
