im looking for types of fish that make a great commuinty tank?
i have a 20 gallon long tank and i been trying to make it into a community tank but i cant figure out which type of fish is best for it. i dont want any goldfish cuz they get too big. i also want something that can handle guppies since i have some alrdy in there.
Two species I highly recommend are Platies and Corydora Catfish. Platies are peaceful and get along with most everything. Cories are the janitors, they will clean up any uneaten food off the tank floor, helping to keep it clean. They tend to keep to themselves and don’t bother anybody else. They are both schooling fish, so you must purchase at least 3 Cories. I would get 5 or 6 Platies, at least. They are both inexpensive and hardy fish.
There are others, but those are my first recommendation.
Neon Tetras are wonderful with other fish. They like to travel in packs, so I always purchase 4-5 of them together. They are bright blue and red, are freshwater fish, and I have never seen them pick on another fish. Not to mention, they are relatively cheap, and pretty durable.

Most tetras are good community fish, but they need to be in a school of at least 6. Platys are also good schooling community fish. You could get a dwarf gourami or two if you want something other than schools of fish. Make sure you get a dwarf though, as the others will get too big for your tank. Cherry barbs and danios would also work. I would stay away from other barbs, since they can be aggressive. You could also add snails, shrimp, or frogs.
