How do I find out if my father was honorably discharged from the Army?

My father passed away and we are trying to find out if he was honorably discharged from the Army, please help.

Go to the National Archives website at:

http://www.archives.gov/veterans/evetrecs/index.html

As a Veteran or the family member of a deceased Veteran you can request and receive ALL military records free of charge.

    If you know what unit he was with, try contacting the commander of that unit to see if the records are still around.

    Follow the instructions on this page in order to request a copy of his DD214. This document is what all members of the military recieve upon discharge. Once you receive this document it should say weather or not he was discharged honorably or not.

    I’m sorry to hear of your loss.

    Do you need to know this for military honors or receiving a flag at his funeral? If so, you need proof more quickly than you’ll most likely get it through the other suggested methods. Try this first.

    Contact the County Recorder’s office for all the counties where he’s lived since he was discharged. (This will be the same office that records marriage certificates.) A lot of people in years past had their DD-214s recorded there. (In fact, it was recommended they do so.) No one thought of identity theft back then. A copy they give you will be as good as the original.
